Artist Statement
Art making is a journey, an awakening and unveiling of self-awareness. Storytelling is a major component to my art making. My art is an eclectic display of various personal experiences, memories, creative discoveries and interests. In some ways, my art making process encompasses the excitement I experience from exploring new techniques or making with different mediums. Exploring and discovering is the part of art making that feels like an adventure. In other ways, my art becomes my self-confidence. Utilizing familiar art making techniques and mediums builds my knowledge and ability in both. Expression is also a component of my art making. I can visually express feelings for which I don’t have words; I call it artistic lamenting. Above, Self-Portrait, is an example of my artistic lamenting. By mixing words with bold color changes and simple contour drawings, my art is speaking of personal connections and memories while simultaneously exploring meditative self-expression with a variety of mediums. Creating is not just the action of making, but it's experiencing my innate purpose. Mark making, whether intentional or expressive, is both empowering and humbling at the same time. The process of making is my natural response of letting go of everyday life and being who I am. The variety that is seen in my art reveals my desire for discovery, both in art making and self-awareness. This is my heart. When others view my work, my hope is that they find connection, deeper meaning, or recall an experience within themselves. My heart fully enjoys exploring a mixture of mediums and I believe my art is evidence of that.
